Belgium Becomes the Fifth EU Country to Approve Tesla FSD (Supervised)

In a development that caught even seasoned watchers of the European FSD rollout off-guard, Belgium has officially approved Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software for public roads — and the signature dropped today, Wednesday 10 June 2026.

Belgium has officially become the fifth country in the European Union to approve the system for public use, with Flemish Minister of Mobility Annick De Ridder — who has been a major proponent of bringing FSD to Flanders and Belgium — breaking the news on X.

Belgium had been fast-tracking its approval process under De Ridder’s leadership over the past few weeks, but the official signature dropped much sooner than expected.

The minister had previously confirmed milestone testing updates to the Belgian public, and the rapid pace of progress made this outcome look increasingly inevitable — just not quite this soon.

How Belgium Got Here

The path to today’s approval began in early May 2026, when De Ridder formally requested that Tesla transfer the Dutch RDW’s approval data to Flemish authorities for review, citing the need to “make innovation possible in a thoughtful and safe way.”

Tesla was required to complete at least 5,000 km of testing before the system could be considered for approval, with testing specifically focused on infrastructure and traffic situations unique to Belgium.

Tesla completed the mandatory 5,000 kilometres of FSD testing on Belgian public roads by 5 June 2026, a key regulatory milestone, with the test file formally submitted to De Ridder’s administration for its official advice on homologation.

Belgian officials said similarities between Dutch and Belgian road systems helped accelerate the process.

With the Flemish Mobility Minister’s signature now secured, the paperwork heads to the regional homologation department, and once fully ratified, Tesla can begin pushing FSD (Supervised) to local vehicles via software update.

What Belgian Drivers Can Expect

As in other European countries that have welcomed FSD, Flemish and Belgian drivers should note that the initial rollout will be exclusive to Hardware 4 (HW4/AI4) vehicles and will feature a regional variant of the FSD v14 branch, tailored specifically for European roads and laws.

Belgium’s Minister of Mobility had previously confirmed that approval granted in any single Belgian region — Flanders, Wallonia, or Brussels-Capital — will be recognised nationwide.

That means today’s Flemish signature has clean, immediate effect across the whole country, removing any risk of a patchwork rollout.

Pricing will mirror the rest of Europe.

FSD Supervised is priced at €99 per month for standard subscribers, with a reduced rate of €49 per month for owners who previously purchased Enhanced Autopilot.

Belgium in Context: Five Down, Many More to Come

Belgium joins the Netherlands, Denmark, Lithuania, and Estonia on the list of European nations opening up to the software, marking the fifth EU country — and 11% of all European countries — to approve public use in the two months since the Netherlands issued its landmark type approval.

The pace is striking.

Today’s historic update comes the day after Denmark became the fourth EU country to recognise the Dutch RDW’s approval of FSD and greenlight it for public roads, and less than two weeks after FSD received approval in Estonia.

The one-day proximity between the Danish and Belgian FSD approvals suggests bureaucratic hurdles are quickly dissolving. At the recent CVPR conference in Denver, Tesla AI chief Ashok Elluswamy shared a map showing every country currently awaiting regulatory approval for FSD, indicating a broader EU-wide rollout is on the horizon.

If individual nations continue to cross-approve the framework established by the Dutch RDW at this pace, a blanket adoption by the European Commission could unify the region under a single regulatory green light for FSD much faster than originally expected.

What This Means for UK Drivers

For readers on this side of the Channel, Belgium’s approval is another reminder of how swiftly the European landscape is shifting.

As of today, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) remains unavailable for activation on UK roads, while it has already begun rolling out in the Netherlands and Lithuania.

The UK must conduct its own independent safety assessment via the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA), and the EU’s mutual recognition mechanism does not apply post-Brexit — the UK does not automatically recognise EU approvals.

As of late May 2026, there has been no official public announcement that Tesla has submitted a complete application to the VCA.

The UK’s Automated Vehicles Act 2024 gives Britain one of the most modern liability frameworks in the world for future unsupervised autonomy, but for today’s supervised FSD, the VCA route remains the critical path, with a realistic projection of late 2026 or early 2027 for an initial supervised rollout — assuming Tesla submits a formal application and the VCA review proceeds smoothly.

The Belgian approval today, coming just weeks after the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, and Denmark, strengthens the safety and regulatory case that Tesla will need to present to UK authorities. Every kilometre logged by Belgian drivers on FSD adds to the growing pool of real-world European data — data that the VCA will ultimately scrutinise when assessing a UK application.
