Tesla UK Sales in 2026: A Month-by-Month Breakdown
After a bruising 2025 in which Tesla registered just 45,513 vehicles in the UK —
a 9.6% decline from the more than 50,000 units sold the previous year
— 2026 has told a more complex story. The American electric vehicle maker began the year deep in the red, but has gradually clawed back ground, culminating in a dominant June performance that sent the Model Y to the very top of the UK’s best-seller chart. Here is a month-by-month account of how Tesla’s fortunes have played out in Britain so far this year.
January 2026: A Bruising Start
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Tesla registered just 718 vehicles in the UK in January 2026, down 50.8% from 1,458 units in January 2025 and down 88.6% from 6,286 units in December.
The sharp January decline is partly structural — Tesla’s delivery cycle typically concentrates shipments in the final month of each quarter
— but the scale of the year-on-year fall pointed to something more than seasonal patterns.
Tesla spent the first half of 2026 digging out of a brutal slump across Europe. Tesla’s UK sales plunged 57% in January as demand cratered, and the automaker’s EU registrations crashed 17% whilst the broader BEV market surged.
February 2026: Small Recovery, Still in Decline
February brought a sequential rebound.
Tesla’s sales in the UK declined to 2,422 vehicles during the month from 3,852 units a year earlier, SMMT data showed, as the automaker stayed under pressure from booming demand for EVs from Chinese competitors such as BYD.
Tesla pushed back on the headline numbers.
“Tesla monthly registration figures are not an accurate reflection of sales or orders taken,” a spokesperson for Tesla said, adding that quarterly registrations gauged Tesla sales better due to the way vehicles were delivered into the UK from its factories.
Notwithstanding that caveat, the year-on-year comparison remained firmly negative.
March 2026: The First Green Shoot
March, the UK’s traditional new-plate month, delivered the first meaningful piece of good news.
Tesla saw a sharp rebound in two of Europe’s largest auto markets in March, with registrations rising 20% in the UK to 8,599 units.
According to data published by the SMMT, the result marked the first year-over-year increase in six months.
The strong plate-change month lifted Q1 totals to 11,739 units, though
despite the March rebound, first-quarter sales came in roughly 800 units below the same period last year.
Tesla led the UK’s electric vehicle segment in the first quarter, after Ford had dominated the category in January and February.
April 2026: Seasonal Dip, but a Year-on-Year Gain
April followed the familiar Tesla pattern of a sharp post-quarter drop.
May registrations climbed from 831 in April, a sequential rebound in line with Tesla’s quarterly delivery rhythm.
However, in year-on-year terms, the 831 April registrations actually represented a 62% gain.
The increase reflects a rebound from an unusually weak April last year, when buyers pulled purchases forward to March to beat incoming vehicle tax changes.
Tesla dropped below the top 10 best-selling brands in the EV segment in April, after leading in the first quarter.
Kia led the UK’s electric vehicle segment in April with 3,087 fully electric vehicles registered; Volkswagen, Ford and BYD followed with over 2,500 EVs each.
May 2026: Third Consecutive Month of Growth
Preliminary registration data tracked by EU-EVs shows that Tesla sold 2,853 units in May, a 42% increase from a year earlier.
May was the third consecutive month above the prior-year level, following six months of declining figures into early 2026.
The month also brought a significant milestone for the brand in Britain.
Tesla crossed 200,000 UK deliveries in March 2024, a decade after handing over its first vehicle in the country. The 300,000 milestone — reached about 27 months later — was driven almost entirely by the Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV across 2024 and 2025.
Tesla also continued to expand its physical footprint:
the company opened the Manchester site — its largest UK facility — in February, a 155,000-square-foot delivery and refurbishment centre in Trafford that handles vehicle handovers and used-car reconditioning for northern England.
The electric vehicle manufacturer reported a 44% year-on-year increase in UK deliveries in May.
Tesla reported that orders and reservations from customers continued to “far exceed” their respective months in 2025 and 2024, and confirmed continuing into 2026 with an order backlog.
June 2026: A Triumphant Return to the Top
June was the standout month of the year so far.
Tesla registered 12,403 battery-electric cars in the UK in June, up 42% from a year earlier.
The Tesla Model Y claimed the top spot in the UK new car market with 6,765 sales, while the Model 3 knocked the UK’s long-standing favourite the Ford Puma into third place, with 5,408 sales.
BYD has spent 2026 outselling Tesla across Europe in multiple months, but in the UK specifically, Tesla’s June volume of 12,403 units dwarfed BYD’s 2,999. The gap shows that while BYD’s momentum is undeniable at the regional level, Tesla still commands the larger single-brand footprint in Britain — at least for now.
June’s surge arrived in the context of a record month for the broader UK market.
SMMT figures showed total registrations rose to 213,166 vehicles in June, up 11.4% compared with the same month last year — the best June performance since 2019.
Electric cars were a major driver of that growth, taking a record 30% share of the market during the month.
The Bigger Picture: Recovery, But Not Yet a Comeback
Tesla’s 42% jump in June is genuine good news for the company, but it needs to be read in context. This is a recovery from a self-inflicted collapse, not a leap to new heights. Tesla lost enormous ground in Europe over the past year — brand damage, an ageing lineup, and relentless pressure from BYD and a wave of affordable European EVs.
The UK gains track a broader rebound across Europe, where Tesla registrations rose in several markets in May. The refreshed Model Y, cheaper variants, and higher fuel costs are driving the turnaround.
Meanwhile, the ZEV Mandate continues to loom large over the entire sector:
battery electric vehicles have accounted for 25% of all new car registrations so far this year, which is short of the government’s 33% target. To achieve that goal, EVs would need to account for more than 40% of registrations during the remainder of 2026.
The logistics of shipments from GigaBerlin and GigaShanghai largely shape Tesla’s UK registration patterns. April, July, and October have consistently been the slowest months, following strong finishes in the final month of each prior quarter.
With that in mind, July figures — due in early August — are expected to dip sharply before another push towards the September plate-change.
