What’s Changed Since Our Last Approvals Update

Since our previous post in this series, the approved-country list has grown considerably. When we last covered this topic, the confirmed approved markets outside North America and Asia-Pacific were limited to the Netherlands, Lithuania, and Estonia in Europe. Since then, five further EU member states have received national approval: Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, Czechia, and Croatia β€” bringing the EU total to eight countries. The EU-wide vote, which could extend approval to all 27 member states in one stroke, remains outstanding and is now expected no earlier than December 2026.

Additionally, in a significant branding development published just yesterday (9 Oct 2026), Electrek reports that Tesla has agreed to rename the system “Tesla Assisted Driving” in Europe, following pushback from Germany’s transport ministry over the “Full Self-Driving” name. This rename is a condition of Germany’s support for the forthcoming EU-wide approval vote. Despite extensive demo rides in Germany, Germany has not approved FSD Supervised for public use and is not on the approved list.

Where Is FSD Supervised Officially Approved? (as at 10 Oct 2026)

The only authoritative source for which countries have full regulatory approval is tesla.com/en_gb/fsd. As of today,

Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is currently available in the U.S., Canada, China, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea

, plus β€” per the Tesla GB page and confirmed by Electrek β€” eight EU member states.

The complete approved-country list, split by region, is as follows:

🌎 North America & Territories (4)

  • United States
  • Canada
  • Mexico
  • Puerto Rico

🌏 Asia-Pacific & Oceania (4)

  • China (limited rollout)
  • South Korea
  • Australia
  • New Zealand

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί Europe – EU Member States (8)

Tesla’s page lists eight EU countries where the system is approved: the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, Czechia and Croatia.

Their approval dates, per verified rollout records, are:

  • Netherlands –

the Netherlands granted provisional EU type approval on 10 Apr 2026, becoming the first European country to authorise FSD (Supervised) on public roads.

  • Lithuania –

    20 May 2026

  • Estonia –

    29 May 2026

  • Denmark –

    9 Jun 2026

  • Belgium –

    10 Jun 2026

  • Slovenia –

    7 Sep 2026

  • Czech Republic (Czechia) –

    21 Sep 2026

  • Croatia –

29 Sep 2026, with rollout to begin soon.

Total approved countries: 16 across 4 continents.

⚠️ Important: Demo Rides β‰  Approval

A number of countries have been the subject of Tesla demonstration drives and ride-alongs β€” most notably Germany and France.

Germany isn’t on the approved list yet.

Germany’s status remains “in review”

, and the same applies to France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Sweden and Finland. Being the subject of demo rides does not constitute regulatory approval and FSD Supervised cannot legally be used by members of the public in those countries. Please do not confuse the two.

How the EU Approval Mechanism Works

Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) did not fit neatly into the existing approval rules, so it reached Europe through the exemption for new technologies in Article 39 of Regulation (EU) 2018/858. This is the route behind every “Tesla FSD approved in Europe” headline, and it explains why approval is country by country.

The first European Tesla approval was granted by the Dutch RDW on 10 April 2026. Since FSD (Supervised) is more advanced than the regulation allowed for, the RDW used an EU exception to build a type approval for the EU. Any EU states may accept this type approval, but they are not required to.

EU-wide approval still needs a qualified majority: at least 15 of 27 member states representing 65% of the EU population.

The EU vote has slipped to December at the earliest, and bloc-wide approval needs 15 of 27 member states representing 65% of the EU population.

The eight currently approved states represent only around 12% of the EU population, so the December vote β€” and Germany’s backing β€” are critical.

What’s Next? Potential Upcoming Approvals

Slovakia

Tesla Full Self-Driving (FSD) could be legal in Slovakia within days. Transport Minister Jozef RΓ‘ΕΎ says the last steps are nearly done, which would make Slovakia the ninth EU country to allow it. Slovakia will formally recognise the Netherlands’ provisional approval.

This would be a straightforward mutual recognition and could happen imminently.

Germany

With almost 19% of the EU population, a German yes would carry real weight for the qualified majority (15 of 27 states, 65% of the population).

Germany’s transport ministry has reached a deal with Tesla β€” including an agreement to rename the system “Tesla Assisted Driving” β€” and is now backing the EU-wide approval vote expected in December 2026. However, until that vote passes and Germany’s national authority signs off, FSD Supervised remains unavailable to German Tesla owners.

The EU-Wide December Vote

The earliest EU-wide decision is December 2026, and that date comes from press reports, not a published Commission decision.

Should the vote pass with the required qualified majority, FSD Supervised could become available across all 27 EU member states simultaneously β€” a seismic moment for European Tesla owners.

Where Does the UK Stand?

The UK is arguably the most keenly watched market outside the EU, yet it remains without approval. Here’s why the UK’s path is different and arguably harder:

Post-Brexit Regulatory Independence

The UK left the EU type-approval system, so EU approvals and recognitions do not apply there; it has its own Automated Vehicles Act 2024.

Because the UK left the EU, it cannot automatically recognise the Dutch RDW’s foundational type approval. The Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) must conduct its own independent GB assessment.

The VCA Process

Tesla’s current FSD Supervised is classified as a Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). Therefore, it is regulated under the existing GB type approval process administered by the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA), using UN Regulation 171 (R171) for Driver Control Assistance Systems β€” the same regulatory route used by the Dutch RDW.

On 17 Jun 2026 the DfT opened a public consultation on Automated Vehicles Statement of Safety Principles (closes 9 Sept 2026). Tesla has not yet formally applied for FSD Supervised.

FSD Supervised is currently listed as “Under Review” for Great Britain.

Realistic Timeline

The supervised target for the UK is Q1 2027, with the VCA expected to review the RDW approval and test data.

A follow-on approval can be much shorter, even a matter of weeks, because the RDW already understands the system and there is a significant amount of data available for FSD (Supervised) since their past type approval was issued.

That is encouraging β€” but only once Tesla formally submits its application to the VCA.

UK drivers can now buy the Β£6,800 package, but the most advanced features remain switched off until regulators give the go-ahead β€” so it’s a purchase for the future, not the present.

(Note: the one-time purchase option ended in the UK on 21 May 2026; FSD is now subscription-only at Β£99 per month.)

In short: the UK has the legal framework, the regulatory route, and a growing body of European approval data to draw upon. What it needs now is a formal Tesla application to the VCA and a completed assessment. Our best estimate remains late 2026 β€” though Q1 2027 is increasingly the more realistic target.

Summary Table

  • Total countries approved: 16
  • EU countries approved: 8 (Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, Czechia, Croatia)
  • EU-wide vote: December 2026 at the earliest
  • Germany: Demo rides only β€” NOT approved
  • France: Under review β€” NOT approved
  • UK: VCA review ongoing β€” NOT approved; Q1 2027 target
  • Slovakia: Approval imminent β€” not yet confirmed
