Tesla’s UK story in 2026 opened with a dramatic slump — January registrations plunged more than 57% year-over-year to just 647 vehicles, a decline that far exceeded the 6.4% drop in overall UK battery-electric vehicle sales for the month.

The monthly figures swung widely across the year, from 718 in January, down 50.8%, to 12,173 in June, up 58% and the company’s best June on record in the country.

By September, Tesla’s registrations in the first nine months reached about 46,200 units, already above the 45,513 it recorded in the whole of 2025.

Tesla UK Sales Month by Month in 2026: The Full Picture as at 15 Oct 2026

After a bruising 2025 in which Tesla’s UK registrations fell 8.9% year-on-year to 45,513 vehicles, 2026 has told a far more turbulent — yet ultimately more encouraging — story. The brand has swung from record monthly lows to record monthly highs within a single calendar year, driven by its familiar quarter-end delivery surge, a slowly rebuilding order bank, and an increasingly competitive UK EV market. Below is a full month-by-month account of how 2026 has played out so far, together with a comparative table versus the same months in 2025.

The Context: What 2025 Left Behind

Tesla ended 2025 under pressure. The Model Y and Model 3 remained the UK’s two best-selling electric cars throughout 2025, yet the brand’s overall market share slipped to 2.25% — below rivals such as BYD, MINI and Land Rover — as Chinese competition intensified and Elon Musk’s political profile weighed on consumer sentiment in Europe. December 2025 alone saw a 29% year-on-year decline, with registrations falling to 6,323 units as BYD’s UK volumes almost quintupled in the same month.

That backdrop made Q1 2026 a pivotal test. The results were, at first, deeply uncomfortable.

January 2026: The Nadir

January 2026 was as bad as it gets. Tesla registered just 718 vehicles in the UK — a 50.8% year-on-year collapse against 1,458 units in January 2025. Chinese rival BYD used the moment to nearly double Tesla’s volume, registering 1,326 battery-electric vehicles. The sheer scale of the decline raised serious questions about whether Tesla’s UK fortress was crumbling.

February 2026: A Fourfold Bounce, But Still Down Year-on-Year

February brought a mechanical recovery. Registrations quadrupled sequentially to 2,422 units, though that still represented a 37% decline compared with February 2025’s 3,852. The pattern was consistent with Tesla’s back-loaded quarterly delivery rhythm, where early months in each quarter are perennially weak as logistics catch up.

March 2026: The Quarter-End Rebound Arrives

March delivered the first year-on-year increase in six months. Tesla registered 8,599 vehicles in the UK — a 20% rise from 7,164 in March 2025 — bringing its Q1 2026 total to 11,739 units. Despite the strong finish, Q1 2026 still came in roughly 800 units below Q1 2025’s total, underscoring how deep the January and February holes had been.

April 2026: Back to a Trickle

True to form, April reverted to a first-month-of-quarter lull. Tesla sold 831 vehicles — a 62% year-on-year increase, though the comparison was flattered by April 2025’s exceptionally weak 536 registrations, when buyers had pulled purchases forward to March to beat incoming vehicle tax changes.

May 2026: The 300,000th UK Delivery

May 2026 carried a landmark moment. Tesla registered 2,897 vehicles and simultaneously delivered its 300,000th UK vehicle, an achievement celebrated at the Manchester Delivery Hub. The milestone arrived a year after Tesla passed 250,000 cumulative UK registrations. Year-on-year, May was up 44% — though again, May 2025’s 2,016 units had set a low bar.

June 2026: A Record-Breaking Month

June 2026 was the headline act of the year. Tesla registered 12,173 new cars — its best June ever in the UK and a 58% jump over the 7,719 managed in June 2025. The Model Y topped the overall new car sales chart with 6,765 units and the Model 3 came second with 5,408, giving Tesla a remarkable 1–2 finish. The result handed Tesla a 5.7% share of the entire British new car market and 19% of its battery-electric segment for the month.

July 2026: The Inevitable Cliff

July repeated a now-familiar pattern. Registrations fell 48.1% sequentially to just 512 units, leaving Tesla ranked 35th among all brands for the month. For context, July 2025 had itself been a dismal month at 987 units — so the year-on-year comparison remained negative.

August 2026: A Modest Mid-Quarter Recovery

August brought a partial recovery as shipments from GigaBerlin and GigaShanghai began arriving ahead of September’s all-important plate-change month. Tesla’s Model 3 led all BEVs with 1,296 registrations and the Model Y added 884, for a combined total of 2,180 units. That represented a decline from August 2025’s 3,243, reflecting the relative strength of last year’s mid-quarter. The overall UK market, however, grew 13.7% to 94,236 units — its best August since the biannual number-plate change was introduced.

September 2026: The Year’s Biggest Month by Far

September is always Tesla’s showpiece month — it is simultaneously a new plate-change month and the end of a quarter — and 2026 was no exception. Tesla registered 15,875 vehicles, up 99% from September 2025’s 7,993, making it the brand’s highest monthly total since at least early 2025. The Model 3 led with 9,929 units and the Model Y added 5,946. Crucially, the nine-month running total of approximately 46,200 units already surpassed Tesla’s full-year 2025 tally of 45,513 — a significant milestone in a year that had started so bleakly.

October 2026: Data Pending

At the time of publication (15 Oct 2026), October 2026 registration data has not yet been published. The SMMT is scheduled to release October figures on Thursday 5 Nov 2026. Based on prior years, October is typically the slowest month of Q4 — Tesla registered just 511 units in October 2025 — so a similarly modest figure is expected before the quarter-end surge in December.

The Bigger Picture

Several themes define Tesla’s UK registration pattern in 2026:

What to Watch for the Rest of 2026

With three months of data still to come, Tesla’s full-year 2026 UK tally will hinge almost entirely on December. If the December 2026 quarter-end push even approaches December 2025’s 6,323 units — and current order backlog data suggests demand remains strong — Tesla looks set to comfortably surpass its 2025 full-year total of 45,513 for the first time since 2024. We will update this page as SMMT releases each month’s data.
